British Church is operated by Protheorem Ltd. This policy explains how we use personal information when you visit the website, contact us, or take part in the prayer watch.

Who is responsible for your information?

Protheorem Ltd is the data controller. It is registered in England and Wales under company number 12812092. Its registered office is 43 Lower Burlington Road, Portishead, Bristol BS20 7BP.

Information we collect

Depending on how you use the site, we may collect:

  • your chosen public prayer name, which may be a first name, nickname, church or prayer-group name, or ‘Anonymous’;
  • your email address;
  • the nation you choose to identify with, if you provide it;
  • your chosen prayer day and hour, whether the commitment is weekly or one-off, and its confirmation status;
  • messages and information you send through a contact form;
  • technical information needed for security and reliable operation, such as IP address, browser information, server logs, and necessary cookies;
  • your newsletter preferences, if a newsletter is introduced and you choose to subscribe.

Religious-belief information

Joining a Christian prayer watch may reveal or strongly suggest religious belief. Religious belief is special-category personal data under UK data-protection law.

Before accepting a prayer commitment, we will ask for your explicit consent to process this information and to display the prayer name you have chosen. You may withdraw that consent and end your commitment at any time.

How we use your information

We use personal information to administer the prayer watch, show the public name attached to a covered hour, send confirmation and quarterly renewal messages, respond to enquiries, prevent misuse, maintain security, and comply with legal obligations.

Service messages about a commitment are not marketing. We will seek separate consent before sending newsletters or promotional messages.

Our lawful bases

We rely on consent where the processing reveals religious belief or where electronic marketing requires consent. We may rely on legitimate interests to administer and protect the website, respond to enquiries, and maintain accurate operational records. We rely on legal obligation where the law requires us to keep or disclose information.

Public information

Only the prayer name you choose, the relevant hour, and any optional nation marker intended for display will appear publicly. We will not publish your email address. Please do not use your full name, precise address, or other unnecessary personal details as your prayer name.

Who processes information for us?

We use service providers to operate the website and prayer watch, including Greenrope for website and relationship-management functions and Google Workspace for administrative records and communications. Other carefully selected providers may supply hosting, email, security, and technical support. They may process information only for the relevant service and under appropriate contractual safeguards.

International transfers

Some providers may process information outside the United Kingdom. Where this happens, we require an appropriate legal safeguard, such as UK adequacy regulations or approved contractual protections.

How long we keep information

We keep information only for as long as it is needed. Regular prayer commitments are reviewed at least every three months and are removed from the active watch if not reconfirmed. One-off commitments cease to be displayed after the relevant hour. Administrative, consent, security, and correspondence records may be retained for a limited period where needed to resolve queries, demonstrate compliance, or meet legal obligations. A detailed retention schedule will govern these periods.

Your rights

You may have rights to access, correct, erase, restrict, or object to the use of your information, and to receive certain information in a portable form. Where processing depends on consent, you may withdraw consent at any time. Withdrawal does not make earlier processing unlawful.

You may complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.

Security

We use proportionate organisational and technical measures to protect personal information. No internet service can guarantee absolute security, so please avoid sending unnecessary sensitive information.

We may update this policy when the prayer watch, service providers, or legal requirements change. The date above will show the latest revision.
